“The Selkie”

Inspired by the selkies of Celtic and Northern European folklore — seal-people who can shed their skins and take human form.

I wanted to capture that moment between the sea and the shore, where neither world quite feels separate from the other. Her hair drifts into the water around her, while the blue washes and ink lines blur the boundary between her and the sea.

There’s a melancholy woven through many selkie stories, particularly those about longing, belonging and the pull of the ocean. It took me a long time to be ready to create this artwork as I have been drawn to Selkie mythology for as long as I can remember. I love how she simply looks as though she knows where she needs to be.
