The Path Before Me
(C) BookofEucalypt.com
Soft dirt coats my shoes as
sunlight illuminates the river bank,
littered in the barkfall
from the old River Red Gums.
They lean close, whispering secrets
in a language I almost remember.
A path before me beckons.
This is the path I asked for,
the one I swore I’d take
if ever it appeared.
Now it lies open,
welcoming, certain,
its rhythm steady as the river beside it.
And yet…
somewhere beyond the edge of sight,
another way stirs.
It flickers just out of sight
like something I once dreamed and
later forgot.
a path that might exist
only if I step toward it.
The Red Gums breathe around me,
their shade offering a promise,
allowing me time to decide.
The old river crossing bridge remains
stand in the distance,
weathered and waiting.
Maybe this sunlit trail
will carry me there.
Maybe that’s enough
for now.
